11. The diagram below shows an activity for combustion.

a) What are the product released during combustion ?
b) How can you test the product released during the combustion reaction ?
c) What will happen if the supply of air is limited ? Explain
d) Give the word equation for the above process ?
e) Name the apparatus used above ?

The solution is as follows:

1. The product released during complete combustion is carbon dioxide.

2. We can test carbon dioxide by passing it through lime water. It turns milky when carbon dioxide is passed through it. The reaction is as follows:

       Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(g)  CaCO3(s) + H2O(l)

3. If the supply of air is limited, carbon monoxide is formed. It is harmful for health.

4.          The reaction is as follows:

       C (s) + 12O2(g)   CO (g)

Incomplete combustion occurs when the supply of air or oxygen is poor. Water is still produced, but carbon monoxide and carbon are produced instead of carbon dioxide. The carbon is released as soot. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas, which is one reason why complete combustion is preferred to incomplete combustion.
