5 Super Cool Experiments That Make Science Fun

Meritnation|Jul 8th, 2015 05:33pm

Science is one of the most interesting subjects specially for young students. However the theoretical study material sometimes make it seem like a daunting subject. The practical aspect of science is so amazing that every young mind needs to be exposed to it to feel its magic. Students can explore the vast universe of science while passing their free time through innovative and useful science experiments. Ranging from simple tricks that require items just from the kitchen to experiments using basic stationery, one can spend hours, exploring the wonders of scientific principles and properties.

Below are some of the interesting experiments we picked for our young students…

1. Your own Rainbow

interesting experiments for kidsWe all love rainbows and eagerly await its rare occurrence. You can now witness a rainbow made on your own, just by using water, a sheet of paper and some sunlight (or a flashlight).

How?

1. Take the glass of water and paper to a part of the room with sunlight. Or point a flashlight over the glass of water.
2. Hold the glass of water above the paper, as shown in the image on your left.
3. When sunlight passes through the glass of water, it refracts (bends) and forms a rainbow of colors on your sheet of paper.
4. Try holding the glass of water at different heights and angles to see if it has a different effect.

Why?

The sunlight refracts as it passes through the water, thus giving you different colors like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

2. Invisible Ink!

Invisible Ink science experiment for studentsIf you and your friends want to create a secret way of communicating with each other, without the elders getting to know, here is what you can do. Get your hands on some lemon juice, some water, a bowl and spoon, some paper to write on and a light bulb.

How?

1. Add some lemon juice to the bowl of water.
2. With some cotton, write a message on the paper using this mixture. Wait for it to dry.
3. Once the sheet is dry, it will look plain white and the message will not show.
4. In order to read the message, take the sheet and hold it close to a light bulb. You will now be able to read the message.

Why?

Lemon juice is an organic substance that oxidizes and turns brown when heated. Diluting the lemon juice in water makes it very hard to notice when you apply it the paper. no one will be aware of its presence until it is heated and the secret message is revealed!

3. Your Own Balloon Rocket

fun science experiments for kids
Now make your vacations or weekends adventurous and fun with your own balloon rocket. All you need is a balloon (the long one is preferable), a straw, some kite string and some tape.

How?

  1. Tie one end of the string to a chair or door knob. The other end of the string goes through the straw.
  2. Pull the string tight and tie it to another support a little far from the first.
  3. Blow up the balloon and leave it untied.
  4. Pinch the end of the balloon and tape the balloon to the straw and launch the balloon!

Why?

When the air rushes out of the balloon, it creates thrust, which is a pushing force created by energy. The air is thrust out, the balloon goes forward. In case of a real rocket, the thrust is created by the force of burning rocket fuel as it blasts from the rockets engine. The rocket leaves the ground when the engines blast down!

4. Tornado in a Bottle

science experiments for kidsWith the help of an empty plastic bottle, a little glitter, some dish-washing liquid and some water, you can easily create a tornado in a bottle.

How?

  1. Fill the plastic bottle with water three quarters full.
  2. Add few drops of dishwashing liquid.
  3. Sprinkle in a few pinches of glitter (this will make your tornado easier to see) and seal the bottle with its cap.
  4. Turn the bottle upside down and hold it by the neck. Quickly spin the bottle in a circular motion for a few seconds, stop and look inside to see if you can see a mini tornado forming in the water. You might need to try it a few times before you get it working properly.

Why?

The bottle, when being spun in circles, creates a water vortex within. The water spins rapidly due to centripetal force.

5. Make Music with Glasses

best science experiments for kids

Without using any musical instruments, you can easily produce sweet music. You need some glasses, a metal stick or a spoon and some water.

How?

1. Take the glasses and arrange them in a straight line.
2. After that, fill the glasses with water. Remember, every glass should have a different amount of water in it.
3. Hit the rim or the sides of the glasses with the spoon or metal stick and observe the sound made. Each glass makes a different sound.
4. Now combine the sounds in different combinations and see if you can conjure up a melody.

Why?
The vibrations produced on hitting the different glasses is different, hence the difference in sounds produced.
