PSA or Problem Solving Assessment is a compulsory test for students of CBSE classes 9 and 11. The test is aimed to ascertain students’ abilities in context with reading, creative and analytical thinking, apart from communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. Students are expected to go through questions of qualitative and quantitative reasoning. All of this is aimed at making students sharper and able to deal with the pressures awaiting them in further classes. The Problem Solving Assessment also allows them to maintain mental agility and clarity.
Students are often clueless as to how to deal with the assessment, even though they have access to certain sample papers at their assistance. For the same reason, we have assembled a bunch of do’s and don’ts for all you students out there who are looking for guidance with respect to the PSA.
1. Keep your study material sorted
The questions asked in the Problem Solving Assessment are not usually related to your curriculum directly. However, they do require you to put to use, all that you may have studied till now. There are questions that might remind you about chapters or topics you may have studied earlier. Hence, it is recommended that you have a good idea about the recent things that you have studied about. In other words, being regular with your everyday study regime is a big advantage.
2. Lose the baggage of fear
Being a 9th/11th class student, you are bound to have gone through several sets of examinations till now, right? So, another set of tests should not be a big deal? But, here’s the catch. The kind of assessment that PSA actually is, will actually interest you! Yeah! They’re fun. Picture a set of quizzes and puzzles that you take up in magazines, so much interest. Well, these are a level higher, in terms of a challenge and on top of it, they help you academically too, in the future.
3. Regulate your study/ practice hours
Though you may need to practise your subjects like maths or the science and commerce subjects everyday, you can score well in the PSA by merely dedicating one hour to it. Practise available sample papers with all the drive you can muster.

4. Pay attention to your weaknesses
In case there are parts in the sample papers or specific categories that you find particularly difficult, make sure you devote enough time to them. Double the amount of time you give to the part and do not give up unless you have cleared all your doubts.
5. Never memorize anything
Since the PSA course does not conform to any definite syllabus or books, memorising questions and solutions will only be an utter waste of effort and precious time. Avoid anticipating questions on the basis of last years’ papers. Consult these papers only for practice purposes.
6. Manage your test time well
While writing the exam, make sure you practise time management every second. Aim the questions you think you require more time and complete them first. Later on, you may do the questions that require less time. Be alert no matter what.
7. Prepare yourself mentally
Before and during the exam, make sure you are alert and ready to give in a lot of effort to the PSA. Remaining energized and confident before a qualitative and quantitative exam like PSA is bound to work in your favor!
