Chapter 18 – Pollution of Air and Water

Important Topics:
1. Air pollution
     a) Air pollutants and their types
     b) Smog
     c) Role of CFCs in ozone hole formation
     d) Acid rain
     e) Greenhouse effect
     f) Greenhouse gasses
     g) Global warming
     h) Measures taken to prevent air pollution
2. Water pollution
     a) Water pollutants
     b) The Ganga case study
     c) Potable water
     d) Techniques to conserve water
     e) 3 R’s i.e Reduce, reuse and recycle

Method for Quick Understanding:
1. Go through the government initiatives like use of CNG in public vehicles, the ‘odd-even rule’ for private transport in Delhi and ‘Green Delhi-Clean Delhi’ to decrease air pollution, melting of icecaps around the world, greenhouse effect, global warming and respiratory diseases.
2. Also, read about campaigns like Ganga Bachao Abhiyan and Yamuna Bachao Abhiyan.
3. Relate all the government initiatives with consequences of air and water pollution to develop a better understanding of both.

MERITNATION TIPS:
a) Do not get confused between greenhouse effect and global warming.
b) Read and understand the Ganga action plan and Taj Mahal case study in detail.
c) Go through question papers of previous years.

Chapter 14 – Chemical Effects of Electric Current

Important Topics:
1. Conducting Liquids
2. Chemical Effects of Electric Current
3. Electroplating

Method for Quick Understanding:
1. Like solids, there are certain liquids also which allow current to pass through them. we are asked not to touch an electrical switch or appliance with wet hand for the same reason. The passage of currents through conducting liquids causes certain chemical reactions and these effects are chemical effects of current.
2. The deposition of a desired metal on some other metal using the chemical effect of current is electroplating. This is widely used to polish the utensils, jewellery, etc.

MERITNATION TIPS:
a) This topic does not require much practise but a thorough study of the chapter and learning the definitions is essential.
b) Make a circuit tester using LED and check whether certain liquids if they conduct electricity or not.

Chapter 15 – Some Natural Phenomena

Important Topics:
1. Electric Charge, Charge Transfer and Electroscope
2. Lightening
3. Earthquake

Method for Quick Understanding:
1. The chapter includes mostly theoretical topics, which are observed by everyone of us. We should be all well aware of their causes and protection. So, the topics should not only be studied but you should also retain them in your mind for future. As they can be helpful anytime.
2. There are two types of electric charges, positive and negative. A body can be charged by rubbing or by simply touching it with a charged object. Electroscope is a device which detects the charge on the object. it is based on the same principle of charging by touching and also on repulsion of similar charges.
3. Lightning is caused by discharge of charges between clouds or clouds and Earth. It is very dangerous. Lightning conductors are used to protect the high raised buildings from the lightning.
4. A sudden shake experienced on Earth’s surface resulting from disturbance in the Earth’s crust is called an earthquake. It is measured on the Richter scale. There are various methods to protect oneself during an earthquake.

MERITNATION TIPS:
a) The working of the Electroscope is an important topic. Make a table of causes and prevention for both earthquakes and lightning. Study seismograph in detail.
b) Instead of mugging up the concept, try to relate charge and lightning to understand the topic in a easier manner.

Chapter 17 – Stars and The Solar System

Important Topics:
1. Phases of Moon
2. Constellations
3. Sun and the Planets

Method for Quick Understanding:
1. This is an interesting chapter and you wouldn’t be bored while reading it. It’s about all the objects we see around us in daytime and nighttime in sky. We know that Sun is at the center and also only light source in our solar system. All other eight planets revolve around the Sun. First four planets are rocky while rest of the planets are gaseous planets.
2. Moon is the only natural satellite to our planet Earth, It is a non-luminous body and reflects the light of the Sun, due to which we see it in phases. You can observe the phases of Moon at night in the sky.
3. We also see innumerable stars at night when the sky is clear. They are all so far from us. Sun is also a star. If you observe the stars throughout the night, you will notice that they also rises from east and set in west, however pole star is always fixed in the sky.
4. These stars when viewed carefully, appear to make patterns in the sky. These patterns are known as constellation.
5. Comets and asteroids are also part of our solar system. Comets come from region beyond the planet Neptune. When they come closer to the Sun, they can be seen in the sky with tails.

MERITNATION TIPS:
a) Make a list of the planets and write at least two important points about each.
b) Try to observe the phases of the Moon regularly and make a chart of it. Phases of Moon is an important topic. You can ask your parent or friends to perform an activity using a torch to represent Sun, two balls as Earth and Moon to visualise how these phases are formed.
c) Make a list of constellations and try to observe them on clear sky, also sketch them.
