The future of imparting knowledge successfully belongs to those who can help the student build interest in the topics he learns. In a quickly globalising world, where time is always on premium, people are looking for options that offer them the flexibility to upgrade their skills (or explore a new hobby) without having to make too many changes to their day and without burning a hole in their pockets.

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT B), has launched its first three MOOCs (massive open online course) – Introduction to Computer Programming (part one), Thermodynamics and Introduction to Computer Programming (part two).

While the first two courses are scheduled to commence in July this year, the third course will begin in September 2014.

There is no eligibility criteria as such to pursue these courses and thus can be pursued by anyone. The courses will be offered via sessions grouped into several themes or topics and every session will be divided into two to four 15-20 minute ‘episodes.’ Subsequently, each episode, will encompass a video recorded lecture of about 8-10 minutes, followed by some practice problems /quizzes.

Besides this, participants will also be able to access additional reading material/ references, if required, for better clarity. Regular interactive sessions through discussion forums, video conferencing and other such technologies might also be a part of the initiative. Know More

About MOOC
A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course that is aimed at large-scale interactive participation and open access via the internet. A recent development in the field of distant education, MOOCs not only provide traditional course material such as videos and lectures, but also provide interactive user forums to help build a community for the students and professors.
While open courseware and large collaborative online courses have been around for over a decade, the year 2011-2012 saw the launch of this new phenomenon of “massive open online course” (MOOC) wherein faculty from elite universities, through several new organizations made complete courses available online for free, to anyone who is willing to enroll.
Some of these courses became extremely popular – attracting over hundred thousand students with participants from almost every country in the world.
