As the JEE Advanced 2015 results were declared and all rounds of counselling concluded, some interesting trends in terms of candidate preferences came to light. Out of 1,17,238 students who appeared for the exam, 26,456 qualified in this year’s JEE Advanced, which was conducted by IIT Bombay. Only 10,006 seats are available across IITs in the country.
IIT Bombay has been the favourite institute for top rankers since 2005. The trend has been consistent. After the first round of counselling, 65 out of 100 toppers opted for IIT Bombay. IIT Delhi came second in line with 30 out of 100 opting for a seat. 3 students opted for IIT Madras and 2 for IIT Kanpur. Old IITs like IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati failed to get any student from the top 100 slots.
On the other hand, very few toppers have indicated interest in any of the new IITs. From the top 1000 toppers, only 20 chose the newly opened IITs in the country and most opted for IIT Hyderabad. Experts say that not much difference has been noticed in the pattern of choosing the institutes by the students over the last few years. Some experts do feel that the newer institutes established in 2008 or later have a long way to go before they can be compared with the older IITs. Students also prefer to opt for the NITs rather than choosing new IITs because of faculty, infrastructure and better track record of placements.

New IITs will obviously take more time to create a rapport & liking with students. IIT-Bombay remains a favourite for many.
