The Joint Entrance Examination, or JEE is considered one of the most crucial entrance exams in the world. Known as the IIT-JEE, before being revised by the Central Board of Secondary Education in 2012, JEE is a combined examination for admission to colleges across the country, in place of exams like AIEEE. The entrance exams are meant for courses like Bachelors of technology and engineering, architecture and planning.

JEE Main 2015 vs JEE Advanced 2015

The Joint Entrance Examination is divided into two parts, i.e., JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). The former is further divided into 2 parts, namely, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is meant for aspirants of Bachelors of Technology and Bachelors of Engineering, while Paper 2 concerns Architecture and Planning aspirants.

While examinees appearing for Paper 2 have different selection and admission procedures once they clear the JEE, Paper 1 examinees have a second exam to appear for, which is the JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is an exam meant to select students for admission into IIT’s and ISM, among other institutes. In order to qualify to take JEE advanced, students need to be among the top 1,50,000 scorers in the JEE Main exam. On the basis of a cut-off, students are selected to go ahead and appear for the Advanced exam.

While the Main (Paper 1) and Advanced exams are directed at a common goal of admissions into engineering courses, there are a few differences in terms of the format of the papers, the patterns and time-and-date schedules of the two exams. We have listed them briefly below:

1. Eligibility: While there is no specific eligibility or selection criteria for JEE Main, JEE Advanced exam can be taken only by the selected 1,50,000 examinees from the JEE Main.

2. Number of Attempts: Aspirants can appear for JEE Main thrice, while they can appear for Advanced exam only twice.

3. Admission in Institutes: Admission into IIT’s, ISM Dhanbad, etc., is acquired on the basis of  All India Ranks in the JEE Advanced exam. While other colleges like DTU, NIT’s, IIIT’s and CFTI take students on the basis of JEE Main scores.

4. Exam Pattern: JEE Main has two parts, in which Paper 1 contains multiple choice questions (MCQ’s) related to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. JEE Advanced has two parts too, Paper 1 of which contains varied objective questions from the same subjects.

5. Mode of Examination: Students appearing for JEE Main have the option of taking the test online or offline, both of which are conducted on different dates and venues. However, in case of JEE Advanced, option of taking the test online is not available as of now.

6. Date of Examination: The JEE Advanced is usually conducted one to two months post the Main exam. Students who clear the latter are expected to appear at designated centres for their Advanced exams. To know important dates for JEE Main and Advanced 2015, click here.

Nice informative post. Jee mains is a first stage, given by about 10 lakhs of candidates. Then, after JEE mains results, about 1.5 lakhs students selected to appear in the Jee Advanced.
I must say that if any aspirant of IITJEE works on basics and focus on the JEE pattern, then definitely he/she can get the best college of IIT.
