The Indian Space Research Organisation launched its maiden venture into space to orbit and study the planet Mars.

This is the first time that the Indian space agency has sent a mission to study a celestial body outside the sphere of influence of the Earth. The previous successful mission sent was the Chandrayaan sent out to probe the presence of moisture on the Moon.

The countdown to launch the Mars Orbiter Mission began today morning at 6:08 am at Sriharikota. The rocket was launched at 2: 38 pm today afternoon. At 4: 48pm it was reported to have been successfully launched into the Earth’s orbit in an elliptical direction heading straight for Mars. Since this was a new and complex design, ISRO feels that the successful entry into the Earth’s orbit is a sign of things going as planned.

The next big date to watch out for is December 1 2013 when the Orbiter, after successfully gathering the necessary velocity to break free of Earth’s gravitational pull, will embark on the nine month long journey to Planet Red. It will orbit around the Earth for a month.

The Mars Orbiter is expected to land on Mars in September 2014 where it will investigate the presence of methane on the planet, a key source of the indication of life there.

What this means for India

The Orbiter was built in one sixth the cost of the current budget allotted by NASA for the mission the USA will be sending in the coming months.

If it reaches Mars on the 14th of September 2014, this mission will join the 21 successfully completed missions on the red planet according to NASA . India will then be the first Asian country to successfully study the promising and extremely intriguing Red Planet. In 2011, China had launched a mission to Mars but had faced complication and hence the mission failed.

What will be the 5 things that you will take to Mars if life is found there? Lets be creative and send in your thoughts in the comment box below.

Cheers!
