Summer school, , summer camps  many students are spending part of the summer months engaged in some sort of educational experience outside of the usual school. Parents hanging around the house will be looking for activities to interest their vacationing students and expand their horizons. Film viewing — active viewing of quality films and supplementary activities — can be an enjoyable and memorable part of the summer’s activities.

One of the most popular ones have to be the genre of animated and family movies . Enjoyed not just by` kids, but even grown ups can’t help but love popular cartoon shows like Tom And Jerry, The Flintstones and many others. Family films have been developing in a huge way in the last decade. Popular film production houses like The Walt Disney Company have come up with several movies that have been loved by all age groups.

Apart from entertainment, these modern movies also carry out the responsibility of teaching the audience something. Most of them show us the tale at the end of which there are lessons we have learnt, morals we have seen. The bad usually gets punished and goodness is rewarded. These movies prove to be effective in teaching the importance of these morals and values to us.

So heres a list of Meritnation recommendations for these summer holidays!

1. Finding Nemo: This 2003 movie is a watery tale, not just because it is based on the father-son duo of fish living in the deep sea, but because its focus on the relationship of the two and the father’s desperation to find his son bring tears to our eyes. Well, almost. The tale gives us an opportunity to dwell over the sacrifices made by parents, the love and concern they have for their kids and the extent to which they are ready to go to, in order to save their kids from trouble. Kids should watch out for the sequel of the movie coming up in mid-2016.

2. Swiss Family Robinson: A family in route to New Guinea is shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island. They are forced to remain on the island because of the damage to the ship and the pirates that are roaming the islands. They create a home on the island (centering around a huge tree house) and explore the island and its wildlife. Plenty of adventure ensues as the family deals with issues of survival and pirates, and the brothers must learn how to live on the island with an uncertain future. This is one of Disney’s best efforts. Beautiful scenery, great soundtrack music a definite summer to-watch list!

3.  The Jungle Book:  All of us have seen or heard some version of the Jungle Book. The epic tale has been adapted many times into movies and TV series and remembered as a great story of friendship and courage. The protagonist, Mowgli, is raised amidst a pack of wolves and can is known to all the animals of the Indian jungle. He has adapted to the ways of the jungle and found his best friends and guides in a bear and a black panther. With the boy growing in the jungle atmosphere, he learns he should follow the rules of the jungle and make never give in to evil.

4. Marley & Me: After their wedding,John and Jennifer Grogan move to Florida. After moving into a new house the John gifts his wife a puppy. While the puppy Marley grows into a 100 pound dog, he loses none of his puppy energy or rambunctiousness. As the Grogans mature and have children of their own, Marley continues to test everyone’s patience by acting like the world’s most impulsive dog. Based on a true story the movie sheds light on the attachment one develops with their pets and how they too become a family to us!

5. Ratatouille: The movie is based in France and targets one of the things the country is loved for, food, as its central theme. What is different is that the central character of the movie is a rat who has a passion for cooking. He experiments and with ingredients and takes his chances at various opportunities in the kitchen of a famous restaurant. The zeal and passion of the rat towards the art is what captures our hearts. Also, his devotion towards his mentor and teacher is brought out throughout the length of the film.

So what are you waiting for ? Have a show scheduled with your friends. (Picture an outdoor screen under a starry July evening! Bring the lawn chairs and popcorn!).
