Summer Break got it’s name for a reason — research shows that taking regular breaks from mental tasks improves productivity and creativity — and that skipping breaks can lead to stress and exhaustion. Did you know that Archimedes, who was given the task of measuring the volume of an oddly-shaped crown, had his “a-ha moment” when stepping into a bath? Or that Kekule was said to have thought of the structure of benzene while riding on a bus?

Being kids, you are bound to get restless in case of inactivity and can also get irritated because of this. And summer breaks can end up becoming really tiresome if you do not have an outing planned or a schedule marked out. Even though you have school, all the homework, tuitions and time for games, there might be times when you feel like you could do something that would help you pass your time. Because a break offer a time for opportunistic planning, in which we are able to notice things in our environment that will help us solve a problem when we have a specific goal to satisfy.

For example, collection of old photographs, posters, different colored and textured stones. A hobby of this sort during the holidays can

2. Learn an art form Well, once you start learning an art form that you really like, it will become very difficult for you to let go. And ideally, you shouldn’t too. An art form can actually change you as a person, in a big way. In a positive way of course! Look for something that you have seen in the past and wanted to know more about. A particular type of dance, vocal music, painting, martial art, instrumental music, or maybe something less common! There is a big list to choose from.

3. Go swimming! For those of you who can swim, there is no need to tell you what fun it is. For those of you who don’t, swimming is one of the most energetic, refreshing and of course, fun activities. There are so many water sports you can learn once you can swim! Also, a cool and rejuvenating swim in the summers can make you feel really good!

4. Start a library For those of you who are into reading books, you can start a book club or a library by yourself or with your friends. Collect all the books that you can lay your hands on and create a fun collection of books. You can invite others to borrow books for you and charge them a minimal fee too. Or, you start a book club where in you read the same books each week and discuss about it, among your friends. This activity could help you in your academics too, as it keeps you near books, but in an extremely fun way.

5. Grow plants Do you feel you have the ability to become a gardening expert? Try it out! Ask an elder or a friend to get you a seed or a sapling and plant it near your house. Till whenever the plant is grown up enough to take care of itself, all its responsibilities are on you. You have to make sure the plant stays intact, is not attacked by pests and gets its regular dose of sunshine, air and water. Planting and nurturing trees gives a really good feeling!

6. Do some social work Social service or social work is not necessarily mean charity. So, even if you can’t afford to spend money or other items for charity, there are several ways in which, you can help the community.
