With the UN declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day, we’ve all been treated to innumerable news and posts on yoga and its benefits for general health.

But how can Yoga make life better for students?

The Art of Living Foundation claims that a 3 minute pranayama can help retain and improve concentration for 3 hours!

So, how about spending less time on study (and having more time to spend on hobbies and friends) and still getting better marks. YES? Yoga is your answer here!

Yoga –> Better Concentration –> Better Information Retention (Memory) –> Lesser Study Time + Better Marks

Most students suffer from low attention span and therefore lesser retention of information studied, requiring a great amount of time spent on multiple rounds of revision. You can practice yoga daily for just 15-20 minutes and have a dramatic improvement in your concentration and memory levels.

Here are 5 simple way yoga poses (asanas) to increase concentration for students:

1. Lotus Pose (Padmasana)

Yoga to increase concentration in students

Process: Sit on the floor with your legs crossed and back straight. Place the tips of your thumb and index finger together and keep your hands on the knee. Close your eyes and breathe deeply, while making your inhalations and exhalations longer and being more aware of them.

Time & Benefit:: Sitting like this for just 5 minutes a day will help you channelise all the nervous and negative energy out of your system and bring a single-pointed direction in your thinking.

2. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Anuloma Viloma)

Can you believe that this five minute pranayama can help retain and improve concentration for three hours?

Process: Sit cross legged with your back straight, and close your right nostril with a finger. Inhale and exhale through your left nostril while bringing your attention to your breath. Now release your finger and repeat the same with your other nostril.

Time & Benefit: Doing this for 5-6 minutes regularly clears your mind and enhances your ability to concentrate.

3. Tree Posture (Vrikshasana)

Vrikshasana is one of the best ways to balance your body and improve concentration.

Process: Stand up straight on both legs, and then shift your weight on your left leg. Then slowly try and get a hold of your right foot, bringing it as close to your groin region as possible. Raise your hands up over your head and join them in a Namaskar. Take long inhales and exhales for a minute or two while holding your balance. Repeat with the right leg.

Time & Benefit: 2 to 4 minutes daily helps build balance and alertness. It also helps in the development of the brain and improves concentration in children.

4. Sarvangasana

Process: Lie on your back with hands under the mid-back. Then lift your legs and lower body slowly so that the weight of the body is supported on the head, neck, shoulders and upper arms. Keep your gaze towards the toes and stay in this position till comfortable.

Time & Benefit: Practicing this for 3 minutes everyday helps increase blood circulation to the brain, which leads to increased alertness and awareness. Your mind then does not digress from the task you undertake and efficiency also goes up.

5. Shavasana

Now try and relax the whole body on the floor with an awareness of the chest and abdomen rising and falling with each breath. Bring your attention to all parts of the body one by one and scan for any muscular tension of any kind. Consciously release it as it is found.

Time & Benefit: 5 to 10 minutes daily can helps students feel relaxed and handle stress and strain in their life more efficiently.

Make sure you don’t fall asleep here! 🙂

In addition to these asanas, eat healthy to relax a restless mind. Also Lack of proper rest can make children feel edgy and not pay attention to what’s going on in class. So ensure that you get a good 8 hours of sleep and stay refreshed.

We hope this helps you increase your concentration and save on your study time so that you can afford to spend much more time on hobbies and friends! 🙂

Meritnation wishes everyone a very Happy Yoga Day!
