Maharashtra Board Class 10 English Syllabus for 2014-15

This year's English syllabus for Maharashtra SSC Class 10 students is sure to enhance their grammatical and literary knowledge and prepare them better for their SSC exams. The syllabus for Maharashtra SSC English is dedicated to students better understanding of the language. Hence, there are several popular texts included in the English syllabus this year. General Objectives:

To enable the student to:

1. develop his/her language skills to a fair degree of proficiency.

2. acquire communication skills in English useful for higher education and also for real life situations, such as social interaction, vocations and entrepreneurship development.

3. enrich his / her vocabulary.

4. use English in appropriate grammatical forms.

5. use dictionaries, encyclopedias and such other reference materials.

6. develop the ability to use English for the development of personality and for the building of character.

7. cultivate a broad human and cultural outlook.

8. develop interest in and appreciation of Literature.

9. to facilitate self learning to enable them to become independent learners.

Maharashtra SSC Syllabus:

1. A Coursebook in English (Kumarbharati)

a) Detailed study:

i) Prose: About 64 pages of literary and nonliterary (informative) text (excluding notes, illustrations, tasks, etc.

ii) Poetry: About 250 lines. Non-detailed study : A selection of literary texts (short stories, one act play)

2. Grammar

a) Revision of grammatical items studied up to Std VIII.

b) Different kinds of sentences: Simple, Compound, Complex

c) Different kinds of clauses: Principal, Co-ordinate, Sub-ordinate

d) The Tenses:

i) Present perfect

ii) Future perfect

iii) Past perfect

iv) Future with will/shall and ‘going to'

v) Sequence of tenses

e) Articles: a, an, the (advanced level)

f) Prepositions: different uses

g) Word Formation: Nouns/Adjectives/Verbs/Adverbs

h) Voice: Statements, questions, negatives, indirect object

i) Question formation: Tag questions

j) Reported Speech: Statements, questions, commands, requests, exclamation

k) Punctuation: Usage

l) Non-finites: Infinitives, Gerunds, Participles

m) Modal Auxiliaries: Uses of ‘can', ‘may', ‘might', etc

n) Conditionals: Unreal conditions in the present/past Possible conditions in the future

Weightage to be given at Std. IX and X:

The following weightage is to be given to the various aspects of the syllabus:

1. Reading Skill (Textual and nontextual) 40%

2. Grammar 15%

3. Writing skill 25%

4. Oral test 20%
