IIT Delhi Ranked Among the World’s Top 200 For The First Time in History

It’s great news for IIT Delhi and IISc Bengaluru and a reason for the country to celebrate as for the first time in history, these prestigious institutes have been ranked in the top 200 universities of the world in an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Known as the QS World University Rankings, it is one of the most authoritative ranking systems across the globe.

The ranking system is assigned on the basis of numerous factors like strength of the universities in terms of research, teaching, academic reputation, student staff ratio, etc. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru has secured the 147th position in the list while the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi has bagged the 179th position in the QS World University Rankings.

This is a major boost for IIT Delhi which was at 235th place in previous year’s rankings. Other institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur secured the 202, 254 and 271 positions among the top 300 in the QS Rankings. Jawaharlal University (JNU) lead the University in Arts, Science and Humanities table placed at 168 while the Delhi University (DU) is placed at the 169th position in this section.

President Pranab Mukherjee found time to congratulate the institutes via a tweet.

Ben Sowter, QS Head of Research, in an interview to The Times of India, pointed out that in order to compete internationally, Indian universities should start engaging internationally and should focus more on fostering global citizens while maintaining their strength in research, engineering, technology and natural sciences.

The top two positions were grabbed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University.
