Single CET for Admissions to Engineering and Medical Colleges in Maharashtra

maharashtra engineering collegesThe Maharashtra state government has come to a resolution to conduct only one Common Entrance Test, MHT-CET, where students’ scores will be considered for both engineering and medical admission from next session in 2016-2017. The orders for MHT-CET for admissions to 2016-17 academic session were finally issued by the state govt. on August 29, 2015.

According to this new notification, Class 12 marks will not be given any weightage as it was done in the last two years. The CET will follow the pattern which was previously followed till 2012. Physics and chemistry will be a common subjects for all students appearing for the CET, while marks of Biology will be considered for admissions to health science courses and marks of mathematics will be considered for engineering aspirants.

Many students have welcomed this government resolution and state that it has come as a relief to them. However, many junior college teachers are unhappy and are complaining that students will not take Class 12 board examinations seriously as they did in the last two years.

In an interview with the Times of India, the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teacher’s Organisation (MFUCTO) said that if the standard 12th exams are not considered for engineering and medical admissions, then a majority of the students interested in these two fields will take the standard XII exams for granted. President of MFUCTO Shivajirao Patil said, “The students will stop taking the board exams seriously. Colleges try hard to ensure that students attend classes regularly and not depend only on private coaching class. However, this decision will worsen the situation.”
