Modification of Stem: 

• Tuber – The lower leaf axils give underground branches which swell up to produce tuber. Buds are present as eyes which can give rise to new plants. E.g. potato.

• Runner– It is produced from the axillary bud of leaf and creeps along the ground. E.g dog grass.

• Sucker– It produces from the underground part of the stem and bears adventitious roots.  E.g. Chrysanthemum.

• Rhizome – The thick stem part is underground bearing nodes, internodes, buds and scale leaves.
• E.g. Ginger, turmeric.

• Offset mechanism - It is a short, thick runner like projection that gives rise to new plants at its tips. It can grow in all direction from the parent plant.
