Simple permanent tissue originated from meristematic tissue and attained maturity and differentiation. Cells have similar size, shape, and function. It is of three types 1) Parenchyma 2) Collenchyma 3) Sclerenchyma.

1) Parenchyma 
a) Cells have different shapes (oval, cylindrical etc.)
b) The cell wall is thin.
c) The large vacuole is present.
d) They have intercellular spaces.
e) It stores food
f) Chlorenchyma: Parenchyma performing photosynthesis.
g) Aerenchyma: Presence of spaces helps them to float.


2) Collenchyma
a) Cells are thin walled with the presence of cellulose and pectocellulose.
b) Cells are densely packed with no intercellular spaces.
c) It is present in the hypodermis of leaves and stem.
d) It provides tensile strength and flexibility.


3) Sclerenchyma
a) Cell walls are thick and dead.
b) Secondary walls are thick due to the deposition of lignin.
c) They are of two type sclereids and fibers.
d) The tissue is mechanical in nature and provides rigidity to the cell wall.


2. Complex permanent: These are of two type- (a) Xylem and (b) phloem
(a) Xylem:
  • It helps in the transport of water and mineral from root to other parts of the plant.
  • It is unidirectional
(b) Phloem:
  • It helps in the transport of food from leaves to other parts of the plant.
  • It is bidirectional.
