Following are the differences between Jamshedpur and Pittsburgh iron and steel industry ;

a. Pittsburg ​is an important steel city of the United States of America.. The raw material which is easily available here is coalwhereas the iron ore comes from the iron mines at Minnesota which is 1500 kms away from Pittsburg.

b. Shipping is the best route for the import of iron ore. It is cheap and easier. ​Most of the shipping is done through the famous Great Lakes waterway.

c. The geographical location and  climate of Pittsburgh is favourable for the growth of iron and steel. It has a temperate climate and ideal topography.

d. The Ohio, the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers provides a good source of water which is required by the industry.

e. The labour here is skilled and efficient. Moreover, the market is nearby and profitable for the growth of of Iron & Steel industry.


a. Jamshedpur was only one iron and steel plant in India started by by Jamshedji N. Tata at Sakchi in the Singhbhum district of Jharkhand in 1907.  Sakchi was renamed as Jamshedpur.

b. The raw materials iron , coal and manganese came from nearby deposits. Most of  the coal comes  from Jharia coalfields, and iron ore, limestone, dolomite and manganese from Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

c. Train was the cheapeat and easiest way of transportation.  Sakchi was only 32 km away from Kalimati station on the Bengal-Nagpur railway line.

d. The Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers provide a good source of water supply.

e. Kolkata provides a huge market for the progress of iron and steel industries.

f. Jamshedpur also has a good source of local labourers.
