Fluorides of lathanoid element elements are ionic whereas bromides and iodides are covalent. Give reason.
[ NO LINKS PLEASE ]

Dear Student,

The electronegativity of the halogens decreases in the order F>Cl>Br.
As the electronegativity decreases, the ionic nature of the metal halide decreases.

Also, according to Fajan's Rule, the increase in anionic size leads to increase in the covalent character. The anionic size of halides increases in the order F<Cl<Br.

Thus, lanthanide fluorides are ionic in nature whereas chlorides and bromides are covalent in nature.

Hope it helps.
