i m nt able to get d concept of oxidizing n reducing agent plzz help me out :))

oxidizing agents are those which oxidizes another molecule and itself get reduced. It causes decrease in the oxidation number of the oxidizing agent whereas reducing agents are those which reduces other molecule and itself gets oxidized. It causes increase in the oxidation number of the reducing agent.

For example :-

MnO2 + 4 HCl → MnCl2 +Cl2 + 2 H2O.

In this reaction oxidation number of the Mn is decreasing from +4 to +2 so it act as an oxidizing agent. Whereas in HCl oxidation number of chlorine increases from -1 to 0 ,so it act as an reducing agent.

oxidizing agent is the one which oxidises other elements itself getting reduced & reducing agent is the one which reduces other elements itself getting oxidised.

hope it helps you.:)P

Oxidation is loss of electrons and reduction is gain of electrons in terms of electron transfer. So, an oxidizing agent gains electrons and a reducing agent donates electrons. This can be confusing.....i know. But this method is quite helpful.
