In step 4 why to.multiply 4 with 2 and 2 with 4?
Cant i simply multiply 2 with 2 to get 4 ?

Dear Student,

In the above reaction, Nitrogen is reduced from +5 to +1 i.e. the change in Oxidation number is 4 (reduced) and on the product side the number of Nitrogen atoms is 2, so the total change in Oxidation number (reduced) = 4×2 = 8.

This is the reason for multiplying the change in Oxidation number in Magnesium which is +2 (oxidized) by 4 to balance the change in Oxidation number i.e. 8.

Hope this information clears your doubts about the topic.

Keep asking!!
