In the compensation method ,how will we know which certain number we have to add in a sum?

In the compensation method, we add or subtract the numbers as per the requirement in the problem to make the calculations easy. By solving some questions by this method, you will get a clear idea what you have to add or subtract from the given numbers.

Suppose we have to find 337 + 64.

We can round 64 by 60 that is we subtract 4 from 64. So, we have to add 4 to 337.

So, the given expression will become

337 + 64 = (337 + 4) + (64 - 4) = 341 + 60 = 401

The answer will be same if we add 64 to 337 directly.
