Is bond angle of phenol larger or lesser than tetrahedral bond angle.Give reason.

Dear Student,
In phenol, the bond angle is 109o.
This is only slightly less than tetrahedral bond angle of 10928'

This observation results from the partial double bond character which occurs due to conjugation of unshared pair of electron residing on oxygen with the aromatic ring and the sp2 hybridised nature of that carbon to which, the oxygen is attached. S, it does not deviate much from the ideal tetrahedral angle, but is only slightly less.
