Is oxidation an exothermic or an endothermic reaction? Why?

It can be both as in case of magnessium it is exothermic but in case of alluminium it is endothermic.

oxidation can be either exothermic or endothermic depending on the reaction. However, in the NCERT textbook, all the given oxidation reactions are endothermic in nature

I thought endothermic reaction.

Oxidation is a type of chemical reaction that does entail changes in energies of the molecules or atoms involved, so it will be either endothermic or exothermic.

Oxidation is basically the adding of oxygen or removal of hydrogen atoms in a chemical reaction, there is no heat involved in oxidation.
But processes such as evaporation, sublimation are endothermic
While processes such as burning (2C + O---> 2CO2) are exothermic

Oxidation reaction is exothermic.
  • 1
EXOTHERMIC REACTION : This is the reaction which liberates heat during the reaction.
ENDOTHERMIC REACTION: This is the reaction which consumes heat during the reaction.

Oxidation reaction can be endothermic or exothermicExothermic: combustion of hydrocarbons, thermite rxn, burning a reactive metal for example sodium in air. Endothermic: burning a less reactive metal in air. mostly oxidation reaction is exothermic

Dear student,

Most of the oxidation reactions are exothermic reactions because energy is released during oxidation.

Regards

Oxidation is an endothermic reaction. because it is add of oxygen.

Solution. Most of the oxidation reactions are exothermic reactions because energy is released during oxidation.

Oxidation can be endothermic as well as exothermic reaction as during oxidation reaction energy can be absorbed and released in the form of gases.

needs more air in the mix. open the vent at the base.

A yellow/sooty flame indicates that not enough oxygen is being supplied to allow all of the gas to be burnt. Adding more air adds extra oxygen (from that extra air) which enables complete combustion (=burning) of the fuel (=gas) to take place.

A clear blue non-sooty flame indicates that complete combustion is taking place.
