justify the title The shapy plot

Shady is generally referred to things which are dubious or which lead to doubts.

In case of the story here, the 'plot' referred to here is 'shady' on two levels.
Firstly, plot refers to the ghost-story, John Hallock was writing--this is the story within a story.

Secondly, the second plot, or the 'shady plot', is the confusing relationship between John his wife, Lavinia and the ghost, Helena. Lavinia, initially suspects John of having an affair with Helena--hence, 'shady plot'. Keeping such facts in mind, the title of the story is apt indeed.

Hope it helps. Best.
