Situated in Himalayas how can Ladakh be a desert?

Ladakh is a cold desert with low temperature as it is located in the high altitudes of the Himalayas. It is also known as snow land as it lies in the rain shadow area of Himalayas which block the entry of monsoon clouds. This makes the region dry and arid like desert with scanty vegetation.

Ladakh is a high altitude desert as the Himalayas create a rain shadow, generally denying entry to monsoon clouds. The main source of water is the winter snowfall on the mountains.

It is bordered by Tibet to the east, the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to the south, Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan to the west, and the southwest corner of Xinjiang across the Karakoram Pass in the far north. It extends from the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram range to the north to the main Great Himalayas to the south
