Trend in melting and boiling point, Fluoride > Chloride > Bromide > Iodide. Why is this so?

Melting or boiling point of an ionic compound depend on its lattice energy. Greater the value of lattice energy higher will be the melting or boiling point

Lattice energy further depend on the size of anion. For a given metal ion,

Smaller the size of anion larger will be the lattice energy.

Now as the order of size is Fluoride < Chloride < Bromide < Iodide.

and hence the order of melting or broiling point is.

Fluoride > Chloride > Bromide > Iodide.

It is because florine has only two shells and therefore effective charge on the electron increases. as we go down in group shells add up in the elements resulting in decrease in neuclear charge and reduces boiling point and melting point.
