Dear Student,

The term ecosystem refers to the biological system consisting of all the living organisms or biotic components in a particular area and the nonliving or abiotic component with which the organisms interact, such as air, mineral soil, water and sunlight.

The following are the two major types of ecosystem:

1. Aquatic ecosystem – An ecosystem existing in a water body is known as an aquatic ecosystem. It is further divided into marine ecosystem and freshwater ecosystem.
2. Terrestrial ecosystem – An ecosystem existing on a land surface is called terrestrial ecosystem. It is further classified into forest ecosystem, grassland ecosystem, desert ecosystem, and mountain ecosystem.
