Following were the reasons for deforestation during the colonial rule:
a. Forests were considered as wildernesses and thought that it should be brought under cultivation for increasing income .
b. The British cleared huge lands under forests and utilised them for the production of cash crops like jute, cotton, sugarcane etc.which had high demand in Europe.
c. In order to meet the demand for sleepers in railway building , the British cut down the trees recklessly for wood.
d. To promote plantations of tea, coffee and rubber, forests were cut down.
