Why cation is smaller than its parent atom ???

A cation is formed by the loss of electrons from the parent atom. The number of protons remains the same in the cation as the parent atom and thus the nuclear force of attraction for the outer electrons increases (as there are less number of electrons than protons) and hence the distance between nucleus and outer electrons decreases due to which cation is smaller than its parent atom.
