Grp 1 metals are called as alkali metals because after reacting with water, they produce basic solutions.
​Eg: Sodium when reacted with water, it forms a strong base Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
​This can also be tested by dipping a red litmus in the solution, the red litmus will turn blue indicating it is a base.
