Why is the number of chromosomes in a sex cell of a human being 23? where have the rest gone? Aint that he received half from father and half from mother, So how come it became 23?!!! ALL THE CELLS IN OUR BODY HAS 46 CHROMOSOMES EACH, SO ISNT IT THAT ALL THE CELLS IN OUR BODY HAS X AND Y (SEX CHROMOSOME, SUPPOSE A Boy) IN EVERY CELL OF HIS ? Please explain clearly Im confused.....NO links please....

Dear student.

The sex cells, i.e. sperm and egg contains 23 chromosomes.

X and Y are chromosomes which make up the last or 23rd pair of chromosomes in humans. Females have XX combination while males have XY. When gametes are formed after meiosis, males produce gametes either having X or Y chromosome while female gametes always have X chromosome.

The chromosomes do not occur in pairs in haploid cell. For example, Human male gametes (sperm & egg) are haploids with 23 chromosomes. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46 chromosomes. Normally, each parent contributes one chromosome to each of the 23 pairs. Gametes have half the chromosomes of body cells because they have to fuse to create a new organism.
