With the help of a diagram explain how light gets refracted when it passes through a rectangular glass slab.

When light passes from air into the glass slab and then come out from glass slab into the air:

(i) The incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface of two transparent media at the point of incidence, all lie in the same plane. EF is incident ray, FG is refracted ray and GH is emergent ray.

(ii) The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of refraction is constant, for the light of a given colour and for the given pair of media. This law is also known as Snell's law of refraction.
And the constant is called refractive index. 

(iii) In a rectangular glass slab, the emergent rays are parallel to the incident ray.
